Memory foam mattress. Had one four years, never had lower back pain since. Takes a few weeks to get used to it but once you do they are lovely. DON'T buy a Tempur, very overpriced.

Re: Lower back pain. any sufferers?
Sounds like a slipped disc also known as a prolapsed or bulging disc. I did the same bag of sand out of the boot of the car! Never been the same 26 years on but....

Chiro's can fix things but have been known to makes things worse and cost with return visits. Surgery is 50/50, cousin had it done now fine, brother in law had it done and ended up in a wheelchair can walk now but they damaged a nerve so muscle wasted left one leg very weak, now in ongoing pain.

Inflammatories from GP are standard can work or help sometimes so worth a try immediately with rest for a week. Then do all the following....

Mckenzie exercises for low back pain Google on you tube are what professional physiotherapists use and work after a few weeks. This is the best thing to do above all else.

Get a new mattress orthopaedic type and sturdy bed frame under as this affects your posture and is a must.

As said many have one foot longer than the other so visit a podiatrist who will measure to confirm and supply insoles to balance alignment of your pelvis which will cause ongoing problems if not corrected, especially if you walk, jog or run a lot.

Good luck Sydney, drop me a whomail if you need any other advice and I will do my best to help.

When you're feeling better bud -

1. lower back stretching exercises
2. Then use it as an excuse when the missus is up for it and you can't be bothered
3. Same applies to gardening
4. Start drinking using the other hand / arm
5. Make out it has painfully come on when she mentions shopping or you've settled into the armchair to watch sport

Nice one,

Re: Lower back pain. any sufferers?
Yes.

It's easy to get slightly dehydrated without noticing it. Repeat over 40 or 50 years and the bit of your body most sensitive to it, your intervertebral discs, dry out and loose their flexibility.

At least that's what my back surgeon (who didn't have to operate in the end) told me.

Drink plenty of water to avoid this - nothing silly, something like a pint over what you would anyway. Note that coffee has a diuretic effect in some people, so they're effectively drinking less than they actually imbibe.

I couldn't play football for 21 months, and couldn't walk for more than 15mins for 18 of those months because of a prolapsed disc.

That's 5 or 6 years ago, and I got back to playing 2 or three games a week of 6 or 11-a-side (I'm in the middle of another medically-enforced break at the moment, but that's because of eye surgery)

Anytime I've had twinges, it's been when I've forgotten my own advice, and not drunk enough. Could be coincidence, but it's repeated often enough for that to be unlikely.

Popped a disc back in 1999... I look at my life pre back and post back... pre back I was a pretty decent footballer and cricketer... post back I was about 50% of what I was before... It was and still is a game changer... but you learn to cope with what you can and can't do... totally off painkillers now... you and your body learn to live with it

Comes and goes.
Replaced mattress and bed because pine frame and old mattress made it worse.
Still twinges. It's more a case of managing it and knowing what is likely to set it off than it ever not happening.

Re: Lower back pain. any sufferers?
That sonds suspiciously like what I had a few years that ago, I ricked my back climbing out of a window (it was torn muscle that had a nerve, the psoas nerve, running up the middle). The nerve damage triggered back spasms which are no fun at all.

Firstly get some proper pain relief, I had Naproxen and Dizaepam which spuresses the back spasms,
Secondly keep your back moving - the worst thing you can do lie down no matter how tempting. The best things I found for that was swimming (as already mentioned) and be very careful what you do for a few weeks. It might not feel like it now but it will go in the end,

Re: Lower back pain. any sufferers?
I have back problems probably 2-3 times a year. Doctor just hands out tablets. Went to an osteopath a few years back and that did the trick. I really should go once a year to get checked out and put back in place.

For the past 2 months, I have been wearing inside my shoes some insoles from Scholl, they are called Orthaheel. Supposed to help with lower back pain. So far, no twinges in my back and they seem to help when walking. Worth a try, but not cheap.

I had a savage bout of sciatica about a year and a half ago, was on my Right side usually left, Every time I stood up the weight obviuosly transfered to the spine and ruined me, I went on youtube to get some decent advice, American Chiropractor, strteches were not of the raised leg and back stretches variety, He said it did more bad than good if you really had a trapped nerve so he did pelvic streches that gives the spine more room, worked actually plus icing every half hour

Good point about posture, Second Opinion. I know mine is bad, got a bad gait and the soles on shoes wear down on one side.

Re: Lower back pain. any sufferers?
I have these spasms quite often. Been to docs numerous times and then I went private and found the answer.
My left leg is slightly shorter than my right, which is incredibly common and I am without knowing it, compensating for this, which brings on these spasms. I can reach down and pick up a sock, stretch up and bang, the pain is excruciating. I was given a small "lift" to put in my left shoe to bring the height up equally. This has improved my posture greatly.

I get that too, comes along about once every 3 or 4 months, I'm lucky that it's mild. The first twinge takes your breath away then over a few days it gets less and less. Starts in the buttock ( left or right ) and goes down the leg.
